Heart of Empty

Martha Everhart Braniff hails from Houston, where she writes fiction, poetry and essays. Her short story, "Resurrection," published in HAPPY literary journal, was nominated for the 2002 Pushcart Prize. Her suspense novel, "Beds of Broken Glass," was a finalist for the Bellwether Prize.

envies passion,
not her own.
She cannot conjure
new plots, words
or even an image
from the labyrinth of dreams.

Her days, void,
chunks of time with
no scent of music,
no taste of rebirth.

She longs to say
something
worthy or absurd,
but her depleted heart
cannot pump
one more anything
as she scrambles eggs,
makes the bed,
goes to market,
life full of
tripping in circles
no longer round.
